Single-Hung Windows

Angled exterior view of a black single hung window, rendered from the Panes 3D configurator

The lower sash slides upward while the upper sash stays fixed. Choose this layout when a lower opening meets your ventilation needs and you can access the fixed upper glass.

Compare the same dimensions, glass, finish and installation scope. A simpler operating layout does not establish the final price of your order.

Simple Operation

One moving sash means fewer parts and straightforward operation. Less mechanical complexity translates to easier use and lower maintenance.

Tilt-In Cleaning

The lower sash tilts for cleaning. The upper section remains fixed, so plan safe exterior access to that glass.

Confirm lower-sash access

The lower sash slides upward and tilts inward; the upper section stays fixed. Check handle reach, clearance for tilting and safe access to the fixed exterior glass. Have your installer confirm the frame size, installation allowance and usable opening for the room.

Compare glass for your climate

For Midwest and Northeast projects, compare double-pane and triple-pane packages using the whole-window U-factor and SHGC for the selected configuration. Lower U-factor means less heat transfer; SHGC describes solar heat gain. Sun exposure, shading and local requirements matter too. Confirm the applicable ratings and any certification for your final size and glass package.

Review the complete order

Your configured price depends on the size, glass, finish and selected options. Review quantity, taxes, freight and any order-level charges separately, and confirm final dimensions before purchasing. Panes supplies custom windows across the continental US; arrange installation with your contractor. Confirm freight access and delivery timing before scheduling the work.

Single-hung window prices by size

Compare three made-to-order single-hung frame sizes with the same finish, glass and flange. The lower sash moves vertically and the upper sash stays fixed. These examples use the same dimensions as our double-hung comparison so you can compare the two operating styles.

Price is for one made-to-order window with a regular screen and no grilles. Brickmould and interior jamb extensions are excluded. Tax, freight and installation are separate. These are editable starting configurations, not in-stock sizes. Frame dimensions are not rough-opening or clear-opening dimensions; confirm the final measurements and installation details before ordering.

Compare single-hung and double-hung configurations

Use the same 32 × 54 inch frame, finish and glass to compare operating layouts. The single-hung lower sash moves and tilts for cleaning; its upper section stays fixed. The double-hung example has two moving, tilt-in sashes.

Double-pane Low-E 272 / clear with argon. Frame dimensions shown below; confirm the rough opening and installation allowance separately.

Plan access to the upper glass

The single-hung tilt feature applies to the lower sash. Plan safe exterior access to the fixed upper glass; lower-sash tilt does not make the whole window cleanable from inside.

Choose the ventilation you need

A single-hung window opens from the bottom. Choose double-hung if you want to operate the upper sash as well, and confirm the actual clear opening for your selected size.

Included in these examples: Each example has white exterior and interior, a regular screen, no grilles and no nailing flange. Brickmould and interior jamb extensions are excluded. Prices are for one complete configured window; tax, delivery and installation are separate.

White/white and black exterior/white interior are available for these styles. Open a configuration to choose a finish or the version with a nailing flange. Confirm the installation method before choosing the flange; custom dimensions and options change the price.

Estimated production is 15–20 business days, followed by freight transit. For US projects, arrange measurement and installation with your contractor. Confirm freight charges, unloading access and delivery timing for your address.

Black exterior

A closed 32 × 54 inch single-hung window. The horizontal meeting rail separates the fixed upper section from the operating lower sash.

Made to order by Panes.

The NFRC directory identifies Panes Window Manufacturing Inc. as the manufacturer. Our published reference tables connect each window family and glass package to its CPD number, so you can compare the window you plan to order.

  1. Define each opening

Record frame width and height, finish, glass and installation flange. Plan safe access to the fixed upper glass and space inside for cleaning the lower sash.

  2. Review before production

Match every opening to the approved configuration and itemized price. Confirm the whole-window rating for the selected frame and glass combination.

  3. Plan the arrival

Allow 15–20 business days for window production, then freight transit. Arrange measurement and installation with your contractor; confirm your delivery address, freight charges and receiving access.

U-factor
Heat transfer through the complete window. Lower values indicate better insulation. U.S. values use Btu/(h·ft²·°F); metric equivalents use W/(m²·K).
SHGC
Solar heat gain coefficient, from 0 to 1. Lower values admit less solar heat.
VT
Visible transmittance, from 0 to 1. Higher values admit more visible light.

These reference configurations have no grilles. Each row preserves the NFRC manufacturer code for its frame, glass and gas combination. Select the matching series and glass package, and confirm the CPD number and label for your order. Different glass, grilles, frame systems and joined assemblies can have different ratings.

For Midwest and Northeast projects, compare heat transfer, winter sunlight and summer exposure together. A lower U-factor indicates less heat transfer. A lower SHGC admits less solar heat; a higher SHGC admits more. VT describes visible light transmission. Orientation, shading and local code affect the choice. NFRC ratings alone do not establish ENERGY STAR eligibility.
